Fluorescent photo lighting is becoming an increasingly popular option with photographers interested in a cool running alternative to other types of studio lighting. Yes I know fluorescent photo lighting has had its detractors in the past and most of those were well justified because when fluorescent lighting is used in conjunction with standard film photography, it can be difficult if not impossible to get a decent color balance. This is due mainly to the fact that a green shift is experienced by film cameras under normal fluorescent photo lighting. When doing color photography on a digital camera under standard fluorescent lights, compensation can be made by setting your cameras white balance to “fluorescent” and/or capture in RAW format. Then adjust the white balance after you down load it to your computer.

When using a digital SLR in combination with the new color stabilized CFL fluorescent bulbs any minor color shift that may occur can be easily compensated for with a change in camera settings. As more and more of photography moves away from using film in favor of digital, fluorescent photo lighting will find its way into an increasing number of photographer’s studios. The shift to digital media is just one of the items adding to the increased popularity of fluorescent photo lighting, another is that these fluorescent photo lighting units just run cooler than standard studio lighting, thereby reducing the chance of getting burned or starting a fire.

These bulbs can also produce a softer light, which is much easier on a subject’s eye thereby making them more comfortable and natural looking. The softness can be stepped up a notch further by using a softbox lighting kit. These fluorescent lights also consume much less power than their incandescent brethren, which can mean a lot if you use them for many hours at a time.

One other thing that is hard to argue with is the cost associated with purchasing fluorescent photo lighting, with some of the kits starting at just $89.00. As a matter of fact there is a fluorescent photo lighting kit that will fit into just about any budget, whether you a beginner looking to get their studio started or a seasoned pro that wants to start replacing some of his or her older equipment.

One drawback to CFL fluorescent bulbs though is that they do contain mercury. If you should happen to drop or otherwise break one a small amount of mercury vapor will be released. This can be a problem unless proper cleanup procedures are followed as shown here: Cleaning Up a Broken CFL . Breakage is not usually a major issue though.
