How to take event photography in low lighting?

How can I take better pictures in low lighting? There’s a cocktail event coming up I want to take some pictures for. Other than a fast lens and a tripod, what are more tips on taking non-posed pictures with little light? Thanks! =)

You people are stupid. A higher exposer would make the image darker.

If you are using film, use an ASA at least 400, or higher if you can get it. If you are using digital………good luck.

If you may have noticed, event photographers use an external flash and a lens like a 24-70 mm f/2.8 lens … no tripod.

You want a high aperture setting to let in more light. If you are using a digital camera, set the ISO as high as you can. If you go too high the pictures will be grainy. The faster the shutter speed you use, the less motion blur there will be, but the darker the picture will be.

What you can do, in no particular order:

Turn up the ISO (might get noisy depending on camera)
Get a fast lens (like tamron 17-50 2.8)
Get an external flash (no one likes the built-in flash. No one)
Get everyone drunk and make them stand in well-lit areas

The best thing is to practise before the event . you can do this in you house. if you are not very experienced set the camera to auto use the settings that work and don’t zoom in or out as this will mess up the auto setting if you need a flash bounce it or use a diffuser. turn up at the event early to set up and get a feel for the room. it is OK to ask to re shot a photo it is better than missing an important shot
    good luck

Yes, 24-70 mm f 2.8 with an external flash and NO tripod. (Someone will trip on it)
