LED photography lighting is one of the latest areas were LEDs are making inroads. LEDs (light emitting diodes) are small, powerful and an extremely cool running way of getting light where you need it for your photos. LEDs are also infinitely adjustable, from a completely off state all way up to 100% brightness and everything in between. In addition they are extremely power consumption friendly generally using about a fifth to one tenth of the power that conventional lighting uses.
LED photography lighting is becoming more and more popular with photographers as a very portable way to bring additional light to many photographic challenges. LED photography lighting comes in a number of ways from digital camera/camcorder versions all the way up to bicolor infinitely adjustable units that will allow you to mix colors from 3200K to 5400K by simply dialing it in.
LEDs have been around since 1962 and originally came in one color, red. Since the 60’s though, some great advances in been made and LEDs are available to cover the entire visible spectrum of light as well as the ultraviolet and infrared spectrums. - LED Lighting for Digital Cameras and Camcorders – These are small units containing between 112 and 160 bulbs, are dimmable, can come with colored filters and some even with a hot shoe.
- LED 5400K Light Panels – This type of LED photography lighting can be either square or rectangle and will contain between 500 and 1000 bulbs. They are able to produce one color spectrum which is 5400K.
- LED 3200/5400K Light Panels – These units is similar to the 5400K spotlights above, but through the use of supplied filters are able to produce the 3200K spectrum. A purple filter is also generally included with the package.
- LED 3200/5400K Bicolor Light Panels – This type of LED photography lighting is the most convenient and yes the most expensive available. In this type of lighting both 3200K and 5400K bulbs are mounted into the same unit, by dimming and brightening the two colors any spectrum between 3200K and 5400K is achievable. Bicolor spotlights will generally have around 1200 LEDs mounted in the unit.
All of the LED photography lighting mentioned above is dimmable from 0% light emission up to 100% brightness. They also use ultra-bright bulbs that have a beam angle of around 30°, which means that it directs the light forward and are useful from between 1 to 15 feet from the subject. Also a 500 watt equivalency output consumes only a meager 50 – 100 W of power.
